Seminary Scholarships


All scholarship applications and any required information must be postmarked by March 15.  Late or incomplete applications cannot be accepted by the Foundation so please follow all application instructions carefully

Arnold W. "Jeff" and Mabel Rensink Endowment for Seminary Scholarships
Awarded annually to an applicant who has a personal relationship with Jesus Christ and must exhibit a call to the ministry and include a statement which describes that call. Must have completed at least a bachelor's degree and be a member of an Iowa United Methodist Church. Preference to those from the Mason City district. Must be enrolled in course of study leading to a graduate or professional level degree at a United Methodist approved seminary.

Bishop Lance Webb Scholarship
The Bishop Lance Webb Scholarship is available to an Inquiring or Certified Candidate who is a Junior or Senior enrolled as a full-time student in a college accredited by the regional accrediting association and the University Senate, who maintains a B average, and who plans to attend an accredited graduate school of theology.

The Clergy Tribute Scholarship
The Clergy Tribute Scholarship is provided by Iowa United Methodist Clergy as a tribute to their colleagues who pass away. Through gifts to this fund, clergy acknowledge their colleagues' faithful ministry by providing assistance to those preparing to assume the mantle of clergy leadership in the Church. Applicants must have completed at least a bachelor's degree and be enrolled in or preparing to enroll in a course of study leading to ordination as an elder or deacon. They must be preparing for United Methodist ministry in Iowa in a local church or a community focused ministry.

$1,500  Criteria    Application


David W. Ash Memorial Scholarship
Scholarship awarded to a member of an Iowa United Methodist Church or a clergy member of the Iowa Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church. Must have completed at least a bachelor's degree and be enrolled in or preparing to enroll in a course of study leading to a graduate or professional level degree at a seminary approved and recognized by the United Methodist University Senate and/or the United Methodist Board of Higher Education and Ministry. Applicant must be recommended by the pastor and the Pastor-Parish Relations Committee. Emphasis in missions ministry in this country or abroad, will be given preference. Further preference given to members of the following United Methodist Churches: Ames Collegiate, Minburn, Nevada, Clarinda, Ottumwa Willard Street and Decorah-Burr Oak. Financial need considered but not sole determining factor.

The Dean Fullerton Memorial Scholarship
Scholarships to be awarded annually to students who have completed at least a their first year at seminary and are enrolled in a course of study leading to a graduate or professional level degree at an approved United Methodist seminary. Must be a member of an Iowa United Methodist Church and be preparing for ministry in the local church.

E. Lorraine Campney Memorial Scholarship
Scholarships from this fund are awarded to deserving students who have completed at least a bachelor's degree and are enrolled in a course of study leading to a graduate or professional level degree in preparation for full-time Christian service. Preference to applicants from (in order) Burt, Iowa community (regardless of religious preference or affiliation) recommended by Burt United Methodist Church; members of United Methodist Church in the following counties:Buena Vista, Clay, Dickenson, Emmet, Lyon. O'Brien, Osceola, Palo Alto, Pocahontas, Sioux; or applicants (regardless of religious preference or affiliation) recommended by United Methodist Church where Richard E. Campney, Benjamin J. Campney or Rebecca S. Campney Carver is a member; members of United Methodist Church in Iowa Annual Conference.

George W. and E. Fern Maddox Memorial Scholarship
Scholarships to be awarded annually to students who have completed at least a bachelor's degree and are enrolled in a course of study leading to a graduate or professional level degree at an approved United Methodist seminary. Must be a member of an Iowa United Methodist Church and be preparing for ministry in the local church. Financial need will be a high priority in awarding this scholarship. Recipient is eligible to receive a scholarship throughout her/his seminary career, but must reapply each year.

Iowa United Methodist Foundation General Scholarship
From time to time the Foundation receives small gifts designated for this scholarship. The income earned through investment of these gifts is used to provide scholarships. Scholarships from this fund are to help degree seeking students attending either an Iowa United Methodist College or a United Methodist Seminary.

John and Peg Slusher Ministry Scholarship
Scholarship awarded annually to a member in good standing of the First United Methodist Church of Marion, Iowa or other United Methodist church in Linn County,IA planning on entering Christian ministry. First preference given to students enrolled in or planning to enroll in a United Methodist Seminary. Second preference given to junior or senior level undergraduates demonstrating a clear intent on entering full-time Christian ministry.

June and Bernard Hess Seminary Scholarship Endowment Fund
Scholarships to be awarded annually to students who have completed at least a bachelor's degree and are enrolled in a course of study leading to a graduate or professional level degree at an approved United Methodist seminary. Must be a member of an Iowa United Methodist Church and be preparing for ministry in the local church. Financial need will be a high priority in awarding this scholarship. Recipient is eligible to receive a scholarship throughout her/his seminary career, but must reapply each year.

Lorene L. Gerdon Seminary Scholarship
Scholarships from this fund are awarded to members of United Methodist Churches in the following counties: Appanoose, Davis, Mahaska, Marion, Monroe, Wapello. Scholarships are awarded annually to students who have completed at least a bachelor's degree and are enrolled in a course of study leading to a graduate or professional level degree at an approved United Methodist seminary.

Marjorie Gerald and Grace United Methodist Church Seminary Scholarship
Scholarships from this fund are awarded to deserving students who have completed at least a bachelor's degree and are enrolled in or planning to enroll in a course of study that will lead to a degree at the graduate or professional level at an approved United Methodist Seminary preparing for ministry in the local church. Must be a member of an Iowa United Methodist Church. Financial need will be considered.

Meda Crose Memorial Scholarship
Scholarship is awarded to members of Hopkinton United Methodist Church or Hopkinton First Presbyterian Church for attendance at any United methodist affiliated college, university or seminary.

Miller Memorial United Methodist Church Scholarship
The people of Miller United Methodist Church recognize that this scholarship is made possible by monies given in memory of Leila Dewey, Earl Nelson, Bill Boyer, and others, and create this scholarship in their honor and in memory of Miller UMC of Des Moines, Iowa.

The Pleasant Prairie Legacy Scholarship
The Pleasant Prairie Legacy Scholarship was created with funds entrusted to the South Central District by the Pleasant Prairie United Methodist Church. These good stewards decided to this action prior to their closing their doors. Now, the spirit of the Church lives on through their scholarship.

The South Central District Committee on Ministry reviews the applications. Applicants must be South Central District Church members or those serving in a ministerial capacity within the District who are obtaining a professional ministry degree at a United Methodist approved seminary or are in an approved and recognized Course of Study program.

The Rainsford A. & Elizabeth A. Brown Jr. Seminary Scholarship Endowment
Rainsford and Ann Brown were life-long members of the United Methodist Church. They not only met at church, but Rainsford's mother had taught Ann in Kindergarten Sunday School.Rainsford and Ann were married at Grace United Methodist Church in Des Moines, Iowa, and attended there prior to moving to eastern Iowa. They were then members of St. John's United Methodist Church in Davenport, Iowa, for more than 40 years. Rainsford taught an adult Sunday School class for 30 years at St. John's. Ann was involved in many areas of the church, including United Methodist Women.Their dedication to the Church and their strong faith was accompanied by a deep desire to help provide assistance to men and women answering the call to ordained ministry. This scholarship was created as a living testimony to their faithfulness and generosity.

Ruth Schmalenberger Seminary Scholarship
Applicant must have completed at least a bachelor's degree and be enrolled in or preparing to enroll in a course of study leading to a graduate or professional level degree at a seminary approved and recognized by the United Methodist University Senate and/or the United Methodist Board of Higher Education and Ministry. The applicant must be a member of a United Methodist Church in Iowa or a clergy member of the Iowa Annual Conference and agree to return to serve a local church in the Iowa Annual Conference. Applicant must be recommended by the pastor and the Pastor-Parish Relations Committee of the local church holding the applicant's membership, show financial need (not be the sole determining factor) and show evidence of being active in the local church, community and/or school. Preference given to applicants from Iowa counties: Webster, Hamilton, Wright, Calhoun, Boone and Greene.
